Engineering College Admission Test, that ECAT enigma you will be taking if you have a passion for engineering in Pakistan, is the basic assessment that determines your status for admission.
The test is conducted every year by the University of Engineering and Technology, the most prestigious engineering institute in the state found before the partition of the subcontinent.
Mechatronics, electronics, chemical, petroleum, architecture, mining, software are some prominent engineering disciplines offered by the affiliated colleges and some public and private engineering institutes in the country.
The previous year, a wholesome number of students, around 45,000 candidates, took ECAT in 13 test centers scattered around each province in Pakistan – one in each big city of every province, one in the capital and the rest in the cities of Punjab.

Highest Scorer in 2019

Faiq Irfan, a brilliant student of the Punjab Group of Colleges (PGC), got the first position by securing 336 marks in ECAT results announced by the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore.
The estimated average of ECAT 2019 was a score of 95 out of 400. The Pre-Engineering students average marks were 85. The candidates competed for a limited number of around 2,500 seats that were distributed among all the various campuses of UET throughout the province.
With that in mind, scoring well isn’t good enough. You need to be scoring amazing for the test, at least more than 60 to 70% for getting admission in your choice of discipline and university.
Lately, UET introduced a combined entry test that was to cater to all subject groups opted by the aspirants on a single day.
Procedure to Check the Result

Once the candidates have taken the exam, they can check their answers by consulting their course materials since they will be taking the carbon copies of their answer sheets home. However, for the official results, browse the official website of UET and enter your 12-digit CNIC and the candidate’s entry test roll number.
Subject Combinations

ECAT has the following subject combinations that you can choose from while filling out the application form online:
- ECAT Pre-Engineering (English, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry)
- ECAT Computer Science (English, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science)
- ECAT General Science (English, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics)
- ECAT Pre-Medical (English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry)
The students are assessed in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, Computer Science, Statistics according to their chosen subject group.
Percentage Distribution

The selection criterion by UET is set as:
30% weightage – ECAT result
70% weightage – marks in FSc or an equivalent degree
ECAT Result

The test is a 100-minute assessment of your memory and comprehension regarding the subjects you chose. The general marks distribution goes like this:
- English – 10 MCQs
- Chemistry – 30 MCQs
- Physics – 30 MCQs
- Mathematics – 30 MCQs
Each MCQ has 4 marks but that’s not all. The scheme goes as:
1 right answer – 4 marks
1 incorrect answer – negative 1 mark
No answer at all – 0 mark
That makes the total score of ECAT as 400 marks. No student can be credited with scoring full marks considering the condition of negative scoring.
For Fsc Students

FSc (Pre-Engineering)
Candidates shall have passed a combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education of Pakistan or an equivalent examination recognized by the university.
FSc (Computer Science Group)
Here’s a limitation. Intermediate examination passed with a combination of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science shall only be accepted for disciplines like Computer Science, Computer Science & Engineering, City & Regional Planning, Architecture and Product and Industrial Design. The rest of the engineering disciplines cannot be catered for such students.
FSc (Computer Science Group)
Another restraint! Intermediate with a combination of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics shall only be accepted for Computer Sciences, City & Regional Planning, Architecture and Product & Industrial Design.
So are all such students eligible to compete for ECAT? Well, obviously not! The candidate must have a score of at least 60% marks in F.Sc/ ICS / DAE / B.Sc / B.Tech (excluding NCC, Sports, and Hafiz-e-Quran).
For Diploma Holders

Here’s a point of inclusiveness for all! A certain number of seats are reserved for the diploma holders who have qualified for their diploma examination. This is the prerequisite for applying for their relevant fields.
For Pre-Medical Students

Often, this creates trouble for not only the students but their guardians and teachers as well. The student had taken admission in pre-medical aspiring to be a compassionate and respectable doctor in the future. Somehow it didn’t work out. Now what?
Well, where there’s a will, there’s a way!
The individuals always have the option of switching their fields entirely. They need not worry about the fact that they have no clue about the maths syllabus as that’s the only subject that bothers them. In this case, the strategy adopted to adjust them would go like this:
- It is considered that the candidate has passed the examination by parts.
- The candidate’s marks obtained in Biology in FSc will be replaced by those obtained in mathematics examination by the intermediate board.
For Hafiz e Quran

Quran Huffaz (learners) are given a certain privilege in almost every entry test and board examination in Pakistan as an incentive and encouragement for all citizens. An additional 20 marks are added to the final academic score in HSSC (or equivalent examination) of an applicant who is Hafiz-e-Quran but only after the verification of their claim from a committee that assesses their Hifz.
For Other Examinations

- Cambridge Certification from overseas equivalent to a Higher certificate in (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) would be acceptable for ECAT.
- (Advanced Level) British General Certificate of Education in (Physics, Chemistry, and Maths).
- F.Sc (Pre-Medical) with Mathematics as an additional subject.
- American High School Graduation Diploma (12th grade) or Equivalent.
Please keep in mind that there is No Age Restriction for those seeking admission in any Bachelor’s degree course in Pakistan.
With this dissection of percentages and criteria determining the status of each candidate aspiring to get admission in any engineering degree in Pakistan, we hope we have answered all your queries regarding ECAT and its result scheme.
